Number:
DIS-20-03
Title:
CEOS Support for GEODARMA (Data Access for Risk Management) Regional Implementation
Status:
Closed
Creation Year:
2020
Completion Date:
2022 Q4
Description:

Identify a select number of projects with existing resources would benefit from use of satellite data to implement the DRR priorities identified during the GEO-DARMA Concept Phase completed in 2019. Support the preparation of project proposals to the GEO-DARMA SC and guide the projects through CEOS data access. Include consideration of partners in pubic and private sectors as well as humanitarian and civil society groups that work with space-based location technologies. Encourage selection at least one project with existing and mature capabilities and capacities for using satellite data and at least one where gaps and lower capacity offer challenges. Consider island and coastal areas consistent with CEOS priorites. Include CEOS satellites as well as consideration to CGMS and communication satellites when appropriate.

In 2021, GEO-DARMA has focused on developing interest for new projects, especially in Africa and LAC:
o    PRIDE-Botswana: RCMRD and Uni Bochum will partner for a proposal to develop a PRIDE pilot in Botswana.
o    Colombian University risk reduction effort: project to showcase local risk reduction projects using high resolution imagery (suspended due to COVID but could start again mid 2021).
o    Long-term collaboration with CEPREDENAC building on RO Demo activation work to provide satellite data for long-term recovery monitoring and risk reduction efforts (CEPREDENAC GIS Team).

Other collaboration and next steps:
o    APDC: SERVIR-Mekong up and running but unable to identify RADARSAT data in archives relevant to flood library of interest; no further collaboration planned at this time.
o    ESCAP: waiting on requirements from UN-GGIM project on integrated geospatial monitoring for land accounting and SDGs.
o    PRIDE-Botswana: proposal to ESA by 26 March.
o    CEPREDENAC GIS Team to work on RO Demo activation #1 – Iota, and define longer term DRR needs for GEO-DARMA request mid-2021.

Given the re-defintion of the priorities of several organsiations involved of GEO-DARMA, resulting in a lack of activities in 2022, it has been decided to not propose any GEO-DARMA in the 2023-2025 GEO Work Programme
