GEO BON’s Global Biodiversity Observation System (GBiOS) is the focus of the next phase of GEO BON development; satellite remote sensing will play a key role (see CEOS Deliverable BON-22-02 for context and justification).
CBD COP-15 will be where Parties formally adopt the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s plan for the next decade and onward to 2050. A side event there presents an opportunity to further inform Parties and enhance visibility and interest in (GBiOS), thus enhancing the likelihood of some sort of formal endorsement. Such an endorsement has the potential to lead to financial support for GBiOS implementation as well as provide a basis for engagement and cooperation by Parties as GBiOS moves ahead.
Update 2022-11-08.
A side event to provide an overview of the Global Biodiversity Observation System (GBiOS) was developed and submitted as a proposal to the CBD for COP-15. Unfortunately, we learned today that the proposal was not accepted. Apparently CBD had four proposals for every side event slot. However, CBD has asked GEO BON to develop a .inf document that describes GBiOS so it can be provided as a formal document to the Parties. The document has gone through several revisions, including comments from CBD, and a final document is under preparation as of this update and will be submitted shortly.
