Title:
Establish a common description of Future Data Architecture functional blocks and identify interfaces and interoperability approaches
Status:
Closed
Creation Year:
2018
Completion Date:
2020 Q2
Description:
Based on the outputs of the inventory and review of existing standards and approaches at CEOS agencies;on the pilot projects and using the various workshops (listed below) where FDA activities are discussed;FDA-AHT will establish a common understanding and develop a white paper describing the functional blocks and typical interoperability approaches for a generic FDA.

An FDA webinar was conducted in collaboration with WGCapD providing an introduction to the elements of the FDA.

Authoring of the whitepaper has stalled due to insufficient co-author collaboration. WGISS is seeking additional volunteers from a broader range of CEOS agencies to ensure a more complete representation in the authorship. It is anticipated this will be a little easier now that many agenices had conducted at least one major FDA related development and thus have a greater understanding of what the common architecture is.

Progress and structureof the FDA-08 white paper was discussed at WGISS-48. Construction of single FDA architectural view was proving problematic, particularly because the result becomes far more prescriptive on architecture than is intended. A prescriptive approach would not support adoption by CEOS agencies of elements of FDA as is occuring in practice. A revised approach has been agreed and rather than a single white paper there will be a set of underlying papers on the key elements of FDA (e.g. Cloud native data formats, STAC metadata, ODC-API and evolutions, Data Cube interoperability with links to ARD).

It is expected a set of focussed documents will be more accessible and more amenable to adoption to a broader range of agencies.

WGISS49 included multiple presentations on agency infrastructure developments across several layers of FDA. Commonalities and differences are now apparent and work has begun on developing several white papers on each aspect of interoperability;beginning with the terminology paper
