WGClimate #10 in March 2019 agreed the scope of the gap analysis. The 11th meeting of the Joint Working Group on Climate held in Anchorage, USA on 4-6 September discussed the ongoing incremental gap analysis that encompasses ECVs for which the Working Group identified gaps in 2018 and 13 ECVs not yet examined but identified for action in the 2016 Implementation Plan of the Global Climate Observing System. These comprise of 4 atmospheric ECVs (aerosol, surface winds, upper-air winds, and water vapour), 3 ocean ECVs (sea level, sea state, and ocean turbulent heat flux) as well as 3 terrestrial ECVs (fire, land cover, and soil moisture). Three additionally ECVs (lightning, glaciers, and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation) were postponed to 2020 due to lake of support for the gap analysis. The joint CEOS/CGMS Working Group on Climate will report results of the gap analysis to CGMS and the 33rd CEOS Plenary session in October 2019 and the publication of the report is planned for late 2019.
